You Should Be Rich, If You’re Working Creatively

“If you can get the money, you can get the power “

I just finished reading The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles. For those of you who don’t know, I am on a journey to discovering ways of becoming better at the business of show and if I find a way to get rich along the way then hooray! Just think, if I become rich I could support so many performing artists . I could just travel around the world writing checks to artists who need funding for their creations. That would be wonderful. Anyway, according to this book if you are working creatively you are already on your way to getting rich. Okay, “the science” involves much more than just working creatively, but it is a huge part of the  “certain way of doing things” as the author puts it and I like it.

The book explains that in order to become rich we must remove ourselves from the competitive world and enter into the creative world. It goes on to say that when this creativity, which comes from our thoughts, is combined with our actions it will lead us right to the riches! Ha! This is a beautiful concept and just perfect for any creative who wants to be a thriving artist. We are going to be rich!!! There is another very important aspect to “The Science of Getting Rich”. I will let you discover it on your own. “The science” doesn’t work unless you have the whole mix, so you better read it. Oh come on I’m not gonna do all the work for you!

The bottom line is that we need to dream big and be very clear about our big dreams. Let the universe know exactly what you want and how much of it you want. Be as detailed as you can in your desires. Write them down. I can’t say this enough. Writing it down seals the deal. Here’s the thing, you don’t have to know HOW it’s going to happen. All you have to do once you have your dreams is take ACTION towards those dreams. The universe will figure out the rest. I know that may sound all mystical but it’s true.

I’ll give you an example from my own personal experience. When I first created my solo show, I had this dream that I wanted to generate income by touring my show at universities and colleges around the country. I wrote about it all over my journal. I had no idea how to make that happen. I hadn’t even done the show in front of a real audience yet. So step one was to get it in front of a real audience. How do I do that?

Action step #1 Start talking about my show to everyone. This is what I did and eventually an opportunity came for me to present the show in a theater. How do I get people to come see the show? I need advertising.

Action step #2 send press releases and write to every major magazine and paper in NYC.So I did.

I ended up getting a full-page article written about my show in TimeOutNY. This was from a letter or better described as a rant that I typed up, printed out, put in an envelope and snail mailed to an editor whose name I looked up online. That full-page article in TimeoutNY ran national, so a professor from UCLA read the article in California and then flew to NY to see my show. That professor introduced himself to me after the show, wrote me a $350 dollar check on the spot to get a video made of my performance and then he organized my first west coast university tour which included UCLA. That was just the beginning. Gratitude is the best word to describe my feelings after that experience.

Dream clear and big, take action and let the universe work out the rest.

Oh yeah, and there’s that one other very important ingredient that you need to make “the science” work. I’m recommending you readThe Science of Getting Rich
